STYLE / DESIGN
The Submission Mania Gi is Submission’s FC competition line of gi. They are more plain in design and the quality is really good. It is available in White or Blue and the details are mainly in orange, the overall style is well put together. The embroidery found on the lapel, shoulders and pants looks nice. A matching bag will also come with the gi.
What I wasn’t a fan of was the amount of “Submission FC” branding on the gi. You can easily count over 10 times that it’s written on it. To their defense, this is Submission FC’s competition gi and the one their athletes are most likely going to be wearing.
Submission FC’s quality is always spot on and the Submission Mania is no different. The gi features reinforcements and quality stitching on the 450 gsm Pearl Weave fabric and the 10 oz pants.
All the logo embroidery is well done too. I haven’t had any stitches pop since I started using and washing the gi. The pants are cotton and the knee areas are reinforced. I like the rope drawstring and the “mania” embroidery on the left side. It is super elegant and non intrusive to the pants performance and design.
The gi does feels cheap, but that’s because it’s very light and designed to be “flexible.” It is made from high quality fabric and it’s great for summer classes in hot places. This is because the jacket is light and the pants are made of cotton.
The bad: The gi came out of the bag with a very strong smell. It is probably from the ink or the washing process (the gi is pre-shrunk). I was a little worried about the smell but it went away on the very first wash. The main issue is the scratchy inner tape on the sleeves, a problem that is very common. This tape protects the stitching on the inside of the sleeves. In this case, it was stitched on without being folded and tucked in.
It becomes scratchy and can bother you sometimes. I did notice that using some fabric softener after the washing cycle made it a little better, but quite honestly I would just rip that tape off.
The Submission Mania is pre-shrunk and this is a SUPER feature. No guessing sizes or waiting to check how much the gi shrunk after every wash. I have washed it around 10-15 times and then hung it to dry in the shade. I have noticed around 1% overall shrinkage. If I wasn’t taking measurements I would say it does fit the same way it did the first day I tried it.
Kudos to Submission FC for this feature that should be standard on every single gi.
I like the Submission Mania’s look. I’m not a big fan of the orange but it does blend nicely with the white and the grey. I would probably just take the Submission tape off the outside of the bottom skirt jacket. In my opinion, it makes the gi look a little too busy with all the Submission logo’s on it. Or, I would make that tape white and write on it in grey.
WRAP-UP / PRICE
Priced at $140 the Submission FC Mania is a good offer. It’s not the cheapest gi we have reviewed here, maybe not the first gi you should buy, if you are just starting your BJJ journey. It is a good suggestion for a long lasting gi, a light competition gi, or summer training gi. I also have to mention that the gi bag is really good and useful (that’s usually not the case with other brands.)
The Submission FC Mania is available now at Submission’s FC website.
