29.6% Rayon Bamboo
Not 100% bamboo fabric
We got the new Submission FC Bamboo Frenzy gi and this thing is soft and super light. They were not kidding when they said it feels almost like silk. Also, the Bamboo Frenzy is one of the lightest gi we have reviewed so far. With a very clean design and new materials, the Submission FC Bamboo Frenzy retails for $169.95 and it’s available now. Check out what we think about it.
First thing first: let’s talk bamboo.
The composition (lab tested) of the SUBMISSION FC Bamboo Frenzy is:
The bamboo is used to produce the rayon. A couple of years ago the FTC fined several big name companies for selling products labeled as bamboo when they actually were rayon. Having a 100% bamboo fabric is very expensive. A solution is to create a textile out of the bamboo plant. The main problem is that we lose most (if not all) the organic benefits of the bamboo plant and the process to obtain rayon is a chemical one. Several products we see on the market labeled as bamboo aren’t really 100% organic bamboo, even though they are sold as if they were. I had no idea until I did some research for this review. Like I said, 100% bamboo fabric is expensive and until you see the fabric test or you’re 100% sure that you’re getting your gi (or any other fabric) from a reliable brand, you should be very careful when buying bamboo labeled products.
The good thing is that bamboo is still a more eco-friendly plant than cotton. The reason for this is because it requires less water, almost no pesticides and it can grow virtually anywhere. Rayon, even with only 30%, makes this fabric SUPER soft. Research is being done trying to prove that some of the organic benefits of the bamboo are present in the rayon.
One important note: Even though Submission FC’s Bamboo Frenzy is made out of bamboo rayon and has “bamboo” in it’s name, Submission FC does not claim that their gi is made out of 100% organic bamboo or that you’ll get the benefits of a bamboo fabric.

Style / Design
The Submission FC Bamboo Frenzy has a very clean design. There are no patches which is something I love to see. The contrasting brown and green is very different and a nice choice. I also really like the bamboo logo they designed. Submission FC is embroidered on both shoulders and “bamboo frenzy” is on the bottom front of the jacket, top back jacket and left bottom and top right of the pants. It gives you several choices to add patches, if you’re into those things.
Quality / Comfort
All other Submission FC gis I’ve reviewed were great quality and this one is no different. All major areas are reinforced and triple stitched. The jacket cut is a traditional 2 pieces. The sleeves and inside bottom jacket stitches are covered with an extra fabric layer and 4 rows of stitches. It is very comfortable and not scratchy at all.
The pants are not ripstop, that would be out of “theme” in this case, but are very comfortable and light. There are 3 sections to the string loop with a total of 5 loops. I personally prefer when there are more sections so I can tie the drawstring to the side and not close to the center. Also, having 2+ loops in the center will make the weight distribution better. Of course, this is not a deal breaker.
The feature point of this gi is really how comfortable and light it is. It’s almost as if you were wearing a bathrobe, and I’m not exaggerating. The fabric is so malleable and flexible. It’s almost as comfortable as the Ronin Imperial but without the weight and the price tag. I believe this gi is worth the price just for this feature alone. I was impressed.
Also, the lapel is thick but comfortable. You can bend it easily but it’s still stiff against grabbing.
The pants are simple and they get the job done. I wish the knee reinforcement area would go all the way to the bottom of the pants. However, the ones they decided to go with do work for my body type and seem strong enough to last a long time.
The rope draw sting is not flexible but is made with excellent material. So far it hasn’t frayed and the knot is usually strong.
I only had one little stitch that popped out on one of the bamboo jacket logos. Everything else is exactly how it was when I first got the gi which is a good indicator of the quality. I don’t know how long the rayon/cotton blend will hold up against the regular 100% cotton ones, but I don’t see why this gi won’t last a long time. I certainly will be wearing it a lot.
Right out of the bag the Submission FC Bamboo Frenzy fits a little baggier than a regular A2. For a comparison:
|Brand / Model||“A" measure before washing|
|Submission FC Bamboo||177|
|93 BRAND – Hooks||180|
** Washed on cold water and hang dry
I was worried about how much this fabric was going to shrink, but it did behave almost like cotton. I got a 3% overall shrinkage which is regular for a size A2. The sleeves are still a little bit bigger than I wanted, so suggest that you take a look at Submission’s size chart and stick with that size or go a size smaller.
The Submission FC Bamboo Frenzy retails for $169.95 and you are going to be getting a super comfortable and well designed gi. Also, while you’re there grab one of their super comfy bamboo shirts that we reviewed here before. Be advised that this gi doesn’t come with a bag and there are other cheaper options out there, but none with this amount of comfort for this low of a price. I would say that this should be in your gi rotation and not your first gi.
I am happy that Submission FC is here with new and innovative ideas. We can’t forget that the more brands we have the better it is for us. When I started Judo in Brazil, we only had 2 or 3 brands to choose from and that was terrible. Man, I still remember when I saw the first Adidas Judo gi I was drooling, probably literally, but that is a story for another time.
If you want to grab this super comfortable Submission FC Bamboo Frenzy you can do so right now at their website. This is limited edition, so hurry!
