Now that the Shoyoroll Brasileiro is out what are the differences from the Shoyoroll Rio Koi that was released back in August?
There are several, I separated the main one in topics and I’ll try to quickly point them out to you (make sure to click on the pictures to see the bigger version):
On the Brasileiro the jacket is heavier because it is made out of Light weight Pearl Weave instead of the Lite Tech Weave fabric like the Rio. This is one of the biggests differences between them. Also, the Rio has the great art of John Small which is located in different areas inside the jacket, where the Brasileiro does not have anything.
Without the inner art, the Rio could be even lighter but that is what makes this gi so special. I love the Lite Tech Weave fabric, it is comfortable, fitted and SUPER light. By far, this is my favorite fabric for a kimono jacket.
This was a surprise to me: The Brasileiro is bigger than the Rio Koi. Out of the bag, the Rio is very fitted and is the perfect size for my body but the Brasileiro has longer sleeves. I have gotten to the point where I am using a dryer, trying to shrink the Brasileiro down in order to fit me perfectly. I did not have to do anything with the Rio Koi and so far the shrinkage of the Koi is not noticeable. Is it possible that the Rio is preshrunk and the Brasileiro is not?
The pants is what adds weight to the Rio in order to make it heavier than the Brasileiro. There is an extra layer of a Gold Weave in the gusset (the triangular area where both sides of the pants come together.) Also, the knee area of the Rio is protected by another layer of Gold Weave on the inside. The Brasileiro, on the other hand, has ripstop cotton pants which are more fitted and lighter than the Rio’s. In the Rio, John Small’s art can be found inside the gusset area adding to the details given to this gi.
Which one is better? Shoyoroll Rio or Shoyoroll Brasileiro?
I don’t know yet. I really thought I was going to choose the Rio Koi because it’s more beautiful, and not the Brasileiro because it is a cheaper and more popular version of it. However, after I tried the Brasileiro out and noticed how light it is and this was a huge bonus. Also, the ripstop pants are very fitted on the Brasileiro and is a great bonus. Too bad the jacket does not fit me as good as the Rio or the Brasileiro would be my pick. I’m still testing them out and I’ll post the full reviews for both soon but so far, I really don’t have a favorite.
