I:XXVII The Insurgence
It’s not everyday we see a company so bold with their stance and beliefs like I:XXVI (One:Twenty Seven) Fight Wear is. I:XXVII’s name comes from the Bible’s book of James which says “pure and undefiled religion in the sight of God our Father is taking care of widows and orphans in their time of need…” Their motto is “Find your fight” and they already found theirs: help others. No less than 20% from all proceeds of I:XXVII products is donated towards funding the cause of fighting the orphan crisis by means of adoption.
The timing couldn’t be better, November is National Adoption Awareness Month here in US and it helps us to remember that more than 100,000 children are in foster care waiting for a loving family for adoption.
We are very happy to be reviewing the Insurgence, their first gi and a very good start.
Design / Style
The I:XXVII, the Insurgence, has a plain design and I really like that. The brand logo is embroidered on both sides of the shoulders (aimed towards the front) and on the bottom of the left pants. On the front bottom of the lapel there’s a very nice logo design that is composed of three elements:
- A cross that was taken from the Portuguese crest
- Stars from the South Cross Constellation which is one of many Brazilian symbols
- And both are “wrapped” around a wreath that represents victory.
All together they represent I:XXVII’s roots.
The inside label is a silhouette of the skyline of Atlanta-GO where the brand is from. You can even see the Varsity sign, a vary famous restaurant.
Stitching on the whole gi is contrasting blue and the gi comes in white or blue.
But I believe that the most interesting part of the design is the inside of the jacket where there’s a Franciscan benediction imprinted that says:
“May God bless us with discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships so that we may live from deep within our hearts.
May God bless us with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of God’s creations so that we may work for justice, freedom, and peace.
May God bless us with tears to shed for those who suffer pain, rejection, hunger, and war, so that we may reach out our hands to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy.
And may God bless us with just enough foolishness to believe that we can make a difference in the world, so that we can do what others claim cannot be done”
Surprisedly the last line was missing on my gi which says:
“to bring justice and kindness to all our children and all our neighbors who are poor”
I’m not sure if it was a print mistake or they meant to leave it like that. Either way it’s still a super cool and unique feature.
I really like the clean design and how it stays within the theme consistently. I also like that there are no patches on it.
I loved that I get to review a Gold Weave gi again. I used to only wear Gold Weave when I started Judo and I love the look and the feel of the fabric. For the official specs:
- 550gm Gold Weave
- 100% cotton pants with six belt loops
I was worried about about two things when I got the gi: shrinkage (because of the gold weave and the cotton pants) and if the inside Franciscan benediction would stay there after multiple washes. We’ll talk about shrinkage later. Now, the reason I was worried about the letters being washed away is they are all separated rubber transfers. It’s not a patch that was sewed on the jacket. It looks so much nicer than a patch. So far, I have washed the gi around 10 times and I haven’t noticed a single letter peeling off. I was surprised.
The only problem I found on the I:XXVII, the Insurgence, is some of the stitching on the pants popped. Luckily, it happened where there is a row of triple stitching (that’s what they are there for right!?) Besides the embroidery work, the fabric and the overall material I:XXVII used is top notch. I’m very happy with this model.
The jacket of the I:XXVII The Insurgence is Gold Weave and the pants are cotton, so I was expecting a good amount of shrinkage. This is what I got, 6% on the Jacket and 6.5% on the pants. That makes this model the biggest shrinkage of all the gis we have reviewed with a total of 6.3%.
Also, the pants fit just right before being washed. After the wash, it got a bit tighter. So, I strongly suggest that you go one, or even 2 sizes bigger than you’re used to.
Today, I am 5″7 and 175lbs. I reviewed the A2 and my ideal size for the Insurgence, after the shrinkage, would be a size bigger.
The gi is super comfortable. The Gold weave is probably one of my favorite fabrics. The cotton pants, even though they are not my favorite, fits pretty good and the drawstring is nice at keeping the knot tied during the whole training session. Also, they didn’t add the scratchy tape to cover the seams on the gi.
The total gi weight is 1585 grams which is average:
|Brand / Model||Weight (g)|
|93 BRAND – Hooks||1493|
|Tatami Estilo 3||1708|
The I:XXVII, the Insurgence, is a great offer. It retails for a $150 and you will be indirectly donating at least 20% of the amount to a good cause. Also, you’ll be getting a good looking gi with one of the most comfortable fabrics on the market. Getting the Insurgence should be a no brainer. You can get yours at I:XXVII’s website.
