93 Brand is a fairly new and unique brand. There’s not much about it on the internet, and they don’t even have a website. However, they have great gis for affordable prices. This is my second 93 Brand gi. I got a Hooks that I have reviewed but didn’t published it yet. I have to say that I like both and here is my review of the 93 Brand, The Zodiac, which is a partnership with MEERKATSU.
Style / Design
The Zodiac is inspired by the 12 zodiac signs. What’s unique to this gi is that they designed 12 different patches where you can select any of those and have it embroidered in five different places on the jacket. They also offer (for an extra $9.99) the option to get up to 14 characters embroidered on the bottom of the jacket. This is a unique option and I’ve never seen it before from other brands.
The gi itself is plain with minimal details. This is a trend on most 93 Brand models, they seem to always try to keep it clean. The jacket is plain white with blue contrast stitching, 93 Brand patches are on the shoulders and side openings with a star design pattern.
On the top inside of the jacket, there is a blue fabric where you can see all the 12 designs merged together as a starry sky map. Since that’s where the tag goes, 93 Brand added a silk screen design to the inside of the right side of the jacket with all 12 signs of the zodiac and all information about how to care for it.
When you look at the gi on the website it does look way too plain, but the option to add a nice patch to it complements the design in a nice way. I decided to add the Capricorn sign on the front bottom left of the jacket, and I suggest you to avoid that location because the patch is a little too big and it usually gets in the way of the belt.
Quality / Comfort
The 93 Brand The Zodiac, is not a very expensive gi and I’m pleased with the quality of the fabric and construction. I’ve been wearing this gi for about 2 months, and there are only a couple of stitches that have popped from the collar and jacket. Everything else is in great shape. Here are the official specs:
350 GSM Micro Pearl weave
10 oz. ripstop pants with full-length knee reinforcements
EVA foam collar with ripstop
Stretchy cord drawstring
Multiple drawstring loops
Sublimated interior yoke panel with original Meerkatsu illustrations
Woven star pattern throughout side vents
Interior woven seam taping
Includes your choice of Zodiac patch
As you can see the jacket is very light, and the ripstop pants are great. This is one of the lightest gis we reviewed so far.
The jacket is not as fitted as the Shoyorolls and the pants are a little baggier than normal. It a regular plain gi cut. The inner cuffs of the jacket and pants are protected by a blue fabric, with the 93 Brand Zodiac logo, and it is not scratchy or uncomfortable.
The knee area goes almost to the end of the pants, and it’s a double layer of the ripstop material. There is no protection or reinforcement for the gusset area. The drawstring is really nice: It’s rope and has some stretch to it.
The overall shrinkage of the Zodiac was 3% and I had to use the dryer this time. I had to try shrinking the pants a little. After several wash cycles and a couple of trips to the dryer the jacket fits me very well. It still doesn’t have a tailored cut, but the sizing is perfect for my 5’7″ 170lbs body. The pants are a bit too long, but this is a problem I have with several different brands so it might be due to my body type.
The only main thing with the overall gi fit is that it really feels baggy. I found myself having to worry more about my opponent’s grips and that can be a deal breaker for a competition.
|Brand / Model||Weight (grams)|
|Submission FC Bamboo||1532|
|93 BRAND Zodiac||1538|
|Tatami Estilo 3||1708|
So at $150 is the 93 Brand The Zodiac worth it? It depends, being in a in-between comparison with other options puts this gi in a tough spot; if you want a lighter gi the Flow is cheaper and lighter. If you are looking for a better deal you can get the Hook, which you can get for around $100 on some bjj gear websites one day sales. However, if you want a better fit, a heavier fabric and a elaborate design you’ll have to pay more for it. Here are price comparisons of some of the gis we have already reviewed:
|Brand / Model||Price|
|93 BRAND Zodiac||$150.00|
|Submission FC Bamboo||$169.95|
If you really liked the design and want to get the 93 Brand Zodiac you’ll not regret. It’s available for sale at RollMore.
